'To the Lakes!' exhibition panels for Wordsworth Grasmere
This project involved creating a series of A1 and A2 panels for Wordsworth Grasmere's special exhibition exploring the first tourists that visited the Lake District in the Romantic period.
The main interpretation panels integrated artworks featured in the exhibition to create a design that was less flat without obscuring the text. The colour was chosen from Wordsworth Grasmere's brand palette.
For one panel, I updated Peter Crosthwaite's 1783 map of Lake Windermere from the collection to 1853 using Photoshop. I added new numbered dwellings and hand-drawn illustrations of Wray Castle and Elleray. Research was conducted to locate the new dwellings accurately. Some remained unidentified, as indicated by the absence of corresponding numbers.
Another panel in "costume corner" contained a collage created using Photoshop to illustrate the variety of clothing worn by early tourists. I used seven artworks (all on display) to create the collage.
The final panels included another collage to showcase examples of transportation, using drawing from a journal that was on display; a panel encouraging visitors to describe their experience for tourists 200 years in the future; and a panel set above clipboards for visitors to use, presenting activities created in partnership with Equal Arts.
Alongside the interpretation panels, I also created marketing materials for this exhibition, including the exhibition poster and graphics for social media. These designs took paintings from the collection and superimposed modern tourists (such as paddle-boarders, hikers and mountain bikers) onto the landscapes.
